The Peel Regional Police have arrested 6 persons for large scale theft of ghee and butter from the stores around Brampton area. As per reports, the investigation named ‘Project Flaherty’ began when police learned that ghee and butter worth over 60,000 dollars have been stolen from stores in the last few weeks.
Over 180 incidents of theft of butter and ghee were reported to police, an increase of 135% compared to 2023 incidents.
The individuals charged are named Vishavjeet Singh (22), Sukmander Singh (23), Dalwal Sidhu (28), Navdeep Chaudhary (22), Kamaldeep Singh (38), Harkerat Singh (25).
The police are also looking into smaller businesses that may have been buying the stolen butter and ghee.
“Investigators from the 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) have arrested and charged six individuals in a theft investigation in Brampton. In December 2024, investigators became aware of a significant increase in theft of butter and ghee from grocery stores within the Region of Peel, with losses of over $60,000 in stolen property”, Peel Police stated.
The arrested persons will be produced at the Ontario Court of Justice on a later date.
