Canada: Khalistanis take to streets in Vancouver to oppose Indian Republic Day

Several Khalistanis demonstrated against India on Indian Republic Day in front of the country’s Consulate in downtown Vancouver. As the separatists listened to speeches on January 26, and put up posters disparaging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian officials, Vancouver police blocked the roadway in front of the embassy in the 400 block of Howe roadway. The assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her bodyguards was also extolled by the separatists who were also carrying Khalistan flags with them.

The radicals were advocating for separation of Punjab from India and gloryfying terrorists like Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was shot and killed on 18th June 2023. They also had poster in support of banned “Sikhs for Justice” chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Canada has, in recent years, turned into a hotbed for Khalistani activities as former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government referred to the anti-Hindu and anti-India rhetoric and attacks as ‘freedom of expression’. His government even blamed India for “foreign interference” and for the death of Nijjar based on “credible allegations” but failed to provide any evidence. The developments led to further deterioration of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
