Centre to tell Delhi High Court that Telegram ignored critical warnings before temporary ban ahead of NEET-UG re-exam

The Centre is set to inform the Delhi High Court on Thursday, 18th June, that messaging platform Telegram did not properly respond to several concerns raised by the government, despite repeated warnings and discussions over the past few weeks.

The issue is currently before the Delhi High Court after Telegram challenged the government’s decision to temporarily block its services in India. The restriction was imposed ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, which is scheduled to be held on 21st of June.

According to sources, the Centre plans to argue that it had been in regular contact with Telegram and had repeatedly flagged multiple issues to the platform. However, the responses received were not considered satisfactory.

One of the key concerns relates to the platform’s failure to provide details about the source of information and data connected to certain channels that came under government scrutiny. Sources said these issues remained unresolved even after the government raised them several times.

During the hearing, the government is expected to maintain that Telegram was given enough opportunities to address the concerns but failed to take adequate steps. The Centre is likely to use this point to defend its decision to temporarily block the platform’s operations in the country before the upcoming medical entrance examination.
