Coimbatore: 5 Muslim men booked for attacking woman and her father with knife and bottle over interfaith marriage

The Big Bazaar Street police in Coimbatore have registered a case against five Muslim men for attacking a woman and her father in Tamil Nadu’s Ukkadam, following a dispute linked to the woman’s interfaith love marriage. The five accused have been identified as Sabik, Riyaz, Hari, Basil and Vetri.

The incident took place at the Pullukadu Housing Board tenements in South Ukkadam on New Year’s Day. The complainant, Rifana (24), who is married to Muthukaruppu, told police that the trouble began on the night of 31st December, 2025.

She had gone to meet a friend to make plans for New Year celebrations when two men, Sabik and Riyaz, abused her verbally. After the incident, she left the place and went home distressed.

The next morning, on 1st January, Sabik and Riyaz came to Rifana’s house along with three others, Hari, Basil and Vetri, around 11.30 am. When Rifana’s father opened the door, the group stabbed him with a knife, causing injuries to his hands. As Rifana stepped in to stop them, she was hit on the head with a beer bottle.

After the attack, the group ran away before neighbours could intervene. Residents nearby then informed the police. Rifana and her injured father were taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in an ambulance. Hospital sources said both of them are now safe and out of danger.

Based on Rifana’s complaint, the Big Bazaar Street police have registered a case. A search is on to trace and arrest the five accused involved in the attack in Coimbatore.
