Delhi Assembly Elections: Congress fields former AAP MLA Alka Lamba against Delhi CM Atishi from Kalkaji

The Congress party on 3 January announced that its candidate against Delhi Chief Minister Atishi will be Alka Lamba, a former AAP leader. In a press release issued by AICC, the party said that Alka Lamba will be its candidate from the Kalkaji Assembly Constituency for the upcoming Assembly Elections.

The press release signed by AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal said, “The Central Election Committee has approved the candidature of Ms. Alka Lamba as Congress candidate to contest the forthcoming general election to the Legislative Assembly of Delhi from 51-Kalkaji constituency.”

Alka Lamba is the President of All India Mahila Congress, and is a former MLA from Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi. She is a long time Congress leader, except a brief stint in the Aam Admi Party. After being the Congress for around 20 years, she left the party in 2014 and joined AAP. She contested the polls on an AAP ticket and won from Chandni Chowk.

She left the party and rejoined Congress in 2019, citing unhappiness with the AAP leadership. She was disqualified from the assembly as a result under anti-defection law.

The Delhi assembly elections are scheduled to be held by February, and the Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule in the coming days.
