On Tuesday (22nd September), a Delhi Court granted 7-day interim bail to UAPA accused Sharjeel Imam to attend his cousin’s wedding. Sharjeel Imam is an accused in the 2020 anti-Hindu Delhi Riots conspiracy case. Imam will be out on bail from 4th to 10th October 2026.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Courts granted interim bail to Sharjeel Imam, even as the Delhi Police earlier opposed his bail plea.
In response to the bail pleas moved by accused Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam on 24th August, the Delhi Police emphasised that the accused duo are “masterminds” of the Delhi Riots conspiracy.
The police further highlighted the Supreme Court judgment of January 2026, in which the court denied bail to Khalid and Imam, while granting bail to five other co-accused based on the hierarchy of the role of the accused person.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court will hear Imam’s regular bail plea on 30th September.
In March this year, Imam was granted 10-day interim bail to attend another cousin’s wedding.
Notably, Sharjeel Imam is charged mainly under UAPA provisions for alleged involvement in unlawful and terrorist activities and conspiracy. The charge sheet alleges that he played a role in creating WhatsApp groups and articulating strategies for escalating protests at the instance of others in the alleged conspiracy.
