Delhi Govt approves 4-km elevated corridor in Chhatarpur to ease South Delhi traffic

In a major step to reduce traffic congestion in South Delhi, the Delhi Govt has approved the construction of a 4-kilometre elevated corridor along Sant Shri Nagpal (SSN) Marg in Chhatarpur. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 700 crore, is expected to improve traffic flow and provide faster connectivity to several residential and commercial areas.

Route and connectivity

The elevated corridor will begin near the intersection of Anuvrat Marg (NH-148A) and SSN Marg, close to Qutub Minar Metro Station and extend up to the Tivoli Farms area near Fatehpur Beri. The stretch serves as an important road link connecting Mehrauli, Chhatarpur, Fatehpur Beri and nearby localities.

It is also widely used by commuters travelling between South Delhi and rapidly growing areas such as Satbari, Jonapur, Dera Mandi and Asola. The project is expected to improve connectivity to Lado Sarai, Saket, Mehrauli, Chattarpur Farms, Dhan Mill, Sainik Farms and settlements located along the Delhi Southern Ridge belt.

Traffic relief expected

According to officials, nearly 82,819 passenger car units (PCUs) use this corridor every day. Out of this, around 74,370 PCUs are expected to move to the elevated road once it becomes operational.

The corridor has been planned to separate long-distance traffic from local vehicles, helping reduce bottlenecks on the existing road. Authorities expect nearly 90 per cent signal-free movement on the stretch, which will significantly improve traffic conditions.

Travel time to reduce sharply

Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma said commuters currently spend around 18.9 minutes travelling through the corridor during peak hours, with average vehicle speeds limited to about 12.7 kmph.

After the project is completed, travel time is expected to come down to around 6.6 minutes, while average speeds could increase to 36.4 kmph, offering a much smoother journey for daily commuters.

Better metro integration

The elevated corridor passes close to Qutub Minar Metro Station, a major transit point for residents of South Delhi. Officials believe improved road conditions and reduced congestion will strengthen the connection between road and metro transport, making travel more convenient for commuters.

Economic and environmental benefits

Project documents highlight that smoother traffic movement will also lead to lower fuel consumption. With vehicles spending less time stuck at intersections and moving at higher average speeds, officials estimate annual fuel savings of nearly Rs 38 crore.

The report also states that the corridor will increase the capacity of the existing road network, improve traffic movement at major intersections and support the growing transport demand in the Chhatarpur region, which has seen rapid urban development over the past decade.

Officials said the tendering process for the project will begin soon. The Delhi Govt expects the elevated corridor to be completed within one-and-a-half years after construction starts.
