Delhi govt clears major redevelopment plan for Maulana Azad Medical College and all hospitals in the campus, to be developed as an integrated healthcare hub

The Delhi Government has cleared a major redevelopment plan for the 137-acre campus of Maulana Azad Medical College in central Delhi. The move is aimed at turning the large medical campus into a modern, future-ready centre for both healthcare and medical education.

On Saturday, 25th April, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved a detailed study for this project. The campus is not just limited to MAMC but also includes key hospitals like Lok Nayak Hospital, GB Pant Hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Centre and Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences.

“The campus, spread across 137 acres, is not limited to Maulana Azad Medical College alone. It encompasses several key healthcare institutions that function as an interconnected healthcare and academic ecosystem. The need for a planned, integrated and long-term redevelopment has been felt for a long time,” the CM said.

One of Delhi’s busiest healthcare zones

This entire area in central Delhi is among the most crowded government healthcare clusters in the city. Every day, a huge number of patients come here not only from Delhi but also from nearby states. The facilities handle everything from basic treatment to serious and complex medical care, making them a key part of the capital’s public health system.

The chief minister said that since all these institutions work closely together, there has been a long-standing need to redesign the campus in a planned and integrated way.

Three-phase redevelopment plan

To take the project forward, the government has approved a consultancy assignment. This consultant will study the campus in detail and prepare a long-term redevelopment plan.

The project will be carried out in three stages. In the first phase, a detailed master plan will be created for the entire campus with a vision of 30 years. This plan will follow rules set by authorities like the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and other local bodies.

In the second phase, experts will check the current buildings through a structural audit and technical review. Based on this, new designs and layouts will be prepared for modern infrastructure.

The third phase will focus on preparing tender documents and giving technical support during the bidding process so that the project can move ahead smoothly and on time.

What the new campus will include

According to officials from the chief minister’s office, the redevelopment will cover a wide range of facilities. These include new hospital and academic buildings, multi-storey housing, hostels, and nursing accommodation.

The plan will also add better infrastructure, such as a fire station, improved sanitation systems, internal roads, and smoother connectivity within the campus. Facilities such as cafeterias, parking spaces, and multi-level parking areas will also be developed. There will also be stronger security arrangements across the campus.

The consultant will carry out digital ground surveys and prepare engineering designs, technical documents, and a detailed project report (DPR).

“The objective is to develop it into a modern, well-structured and future-ready integrated healthcare and education hub,” the CM said. She further added that the redevelopment would focus on improving patient facilities, enhancing efficiency in healthcare delivery and creating a world-class environment for medical education.

Cost and timeline yet to be decided

Officials said the final cost and timeline of the project will be fixed after the study report is completed. The government will take the next steps based on the consultant’s findings.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the main goal is to build a well-planned, modern campus that improves patient care, makes hospital services more efficient, and offers a better learning environment for medical students.
