Delhi govt to provide public services via WhatsApp, eliminate office visits for basic work: Here is what we know so far

The Delhi government is preparing to start trial runs of its new WhatsApp governance project next month, officials said on Sunday, 15th February. The move is aimed at making public services more digital and hassle-free, so that people don’t have to visit government offices for basic work.

Under this plan, several government services will be brought directly to WhatsApp. Residents will be able to apply for documents such as birth certificates and caste certificates, and receive updates on their applications through the app. A senior government official told PTI, “The project is in the final stages, and a trial run is likely around next month. Also, some concessionaires have been empanelled through bidding to run the project.”

The system will use AI-based chatbots and WhatsApp’s dynamic flow technology to handle service requests. This means people can send queries, apply for services and receive certificates through a single chat interface. Officials say the platform is being designed to be simple, easy to use and available 24/7.

Around 50 services from different departments have been identified for the first phase of the project. The Information and Technology Department is leading the initiative and coordinating with other departments.

To keep everything on track, the government will also set up a central dashboard. This will help officials monitor applications in real time and ensure quicker responses and the timely delivery of services.
