The leftists and Islamists seem to be all set once again to peddle a victimhood narrative for the 2020 anti-Hindu Delhi riots conspiracy accused Umar Khalid. Fact-checker Vijay Patel posted on X a screenshot of an email informing about the screening of a documentary made on UAPA accused Umar Khalid’s incarceration at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru.
The documentary named Prisoner No. 626710 is scheduled to be screened by the Law and Society Committee of NLSIU at the institution on September 14, the day he was arrested in 2020. As per the email, the screening is being organised to mark the completion of six years of Khalid’s imprisonment and six and a half years of UAPA accused Sharjeel Imam’s incarceration. The documentary is directed by Lalit Vachani, Lecturer at the University of Göttingen, Germany.

Notably, the Political Prisoners Day in India is celebrated on September 13 every year. The day marks the martyrdom of freedom fighter Jatindra (or Yatindra) Nath Das, who made the supreme sacrifice for India’s freedom after observing a historic 63-day hunger strike in Lahore Jail.
The choice of the occasion for the screening of the documentary on Khalid indicates the attempts of leftists and Islamists to portray Khalid as some kind of revolutionary. It is a clear attempt to garner sympathy for Khalid, who is undergoing a legal trial for very serious charges levelled against him. This is not the first time the documentary is being screened at the prestigious institution. Earlier in November 2025, the Legal Services Clinic of NLSIU also hosted the screening of the documentary.
Charges against Umar Khalid
Umar Khalid is a former JNU student and son of a former member of the banned extremist student organisation SIMI. He was arrested on September 14, 2020, for his role in the anti-Hindu Delhi riots that happened in February that year. Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and several others were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the provisions of the IPC for being the minds behind the riots. Over 50 people, including an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer, Ankit Sharma, were killed in the riots that broke out during US President Donald Trump’s visit to India.
Khalid is accused of mobilising people from the Muslim community to run riots, block roads, and harass the public by misleading them about the CAA and NRC.
