On Friday night (27th March), the Election Commission of India released the second supplementary voters’ list under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Election 2026. The updated list is part of the ongoing process to verify and correct the state’s electoral rolls ahead of polling.
According to a report by TOI, the list includes around 12 lakh names. These names are divided into two categories: those who have been restored to the list and those who have been removed. So far, officials have reviewed a large number of cases, and nearly 37 lakh out of the total 60 lakh cases under scrutiny have already been disposed of. The first supplementary list had 10 lakh names.
“We have received 12 lakh names with e-signature and published them. We may publish supplementary lists daily from tomorrow if the Calcutta High Court approves,” an ECI official said, speaking on the second list.
Earlier this week, on 23rd March, the Commission released the first supplementary list of voters whose cases were under adjudication. That list, too, did not include clear data on how many names were removed or added. ECI will publish the third list on 3rd April this year.
As part of the current revision process, lakhs of voters have been put through scrutiny and are being verified by judicial officers. The supplementary lists of voters have been released in phases to ensure that only eligible voters remain on the rolls before the elections.
The development comes as authorities continue to review cases of “doubtful voters” flagged during the revision process. In the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) list, it was reported that around 58 lakh voters were deleted from the voter list due to reasons such as death, migration, duplication, or because the voters were untraceable. This led to a reduction in the number of voters.
However, voters can check their status by logging in to the EC website and entering the details of the booths and constituencies.
The polling for the 294-member assembly is to be conducted in two phases on the 23rd and 29th April, while counting of votes will take place on 4th May.
