Tamil Nadu: Female member of actor Vijay’s TVK accuses a party leader of defrauding her of ₹26 lakh, complaint filed

The husband of a functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has filed a complaint with the Madurai City Police, alleging that SR Thangapandi, TVK’s district executive committee member, committed financial fraud with her wife.

As per reports, Sharmila, an executive of TVK, released a video a few weeks ago, levelling serious allegations against SR Thangapandi. She alleged that Thangapandi had been offering positions to women in the party in exchange for money. She said that he assured her a position in the party for which she had to pay him ₹26 lakh.

She said that she pawned her jewellery to collect the amount to give to Thangapandi. She added that she had to sell the jewellery when she failed to pay the interest on the money she had borrowed. However, she was not given any position in the party, and Thangapandi refused to return her money as well. Distressed by the mounting debt, Sharmila even attempted to commit suicide.

Speaking to the media, Sharmila’s husband, Balaji, said that he paid the amount of ₹26 lakh to Thangapandi in two transactions. He said that he transferred ₹10 lakh to Thangapandi’s son through UPI and gave him another ₹16 lakh, which he collected on the pretext of investing in a business.

However, Thangapandi did not keep his promise and even refused to return the money. Balaji said that his family is in deep distress due to the debt and the mortgage on their land. He added that this pushed his wife to attempt suicide. Balaji said that he has been receiving threats for bringing the issue before the media. He had filed a complaint against Thangapandi, demanding that he return all his money.
