Goa: Suspected cylinder blast at nightclub claims 25 lives, PM Modi and President Murmu share condolences

A massive fire at a nightclub in North Goa killed around 2 dozen people late on Saturday (6th December) night. The police suspect the fire to be caused by a cylinder blast inside Birch by Romeo Lane, a restaurant and club near Baga Beach in Arpora, about 25 km from the state capital, Panaji.

The fire call was received by the Goa police control room at 12:04 am. Within minutes, the police, fire brigade and ambulances reached the club. Goa’s Director General of Police later said that the blaze had been brought under control and that all bodies were recovered from the building.

By Sunday morning (7th December), the police confirmed that 25 people had died in the incident. Four of them were tourists, and 14 were restaurant staff members. The identities of seven other victims have not been confirmed yet. Six people were also injured and are currently being treated. Officials said that the exact reason behind the fire is still being investigated by the police and fire department.

Multiple fire tenders were rushed to the scene and, after nearly two hours of intense efforts, the blaze was finally brought under control. 

The nightclub has been sealed for now, and questioning of the owners and management is currently underway. As per initial information, the club had not abided by the fire safety norms.

Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant termed the day “very painful” after the tragic fire at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed condolences and said she was deeply saddened by the tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of lives and wished for an early recovery of the injured. PM Modi announced ₹2 lakh compensation for each of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the PM Relief Fund.
