A shocking incident of love jihad has come to light from Gandhidham in Gujarat’s Kutch district, where a Hindu woman named Sonam Sunar lost her life after being brutally beaten by her Muslim husband, Sultan Jusab Sumra, inside her home. Police have arrested him in connection with the case and have started a detailed investigation.

According to information available so far, Sonam was originally from Nepal. She had come to Kutch with her family in search of work. She later entered into a love relationship with Sultan Sumra, and the two got married in 2011. After the marriage, the couple initially lived together without any major issues.
Family says she faced continuous harassment
As time passed, Sonam’s family said she was repeatedly pressured by her husband to cut off all contact with her own relatives. They also claim that she was subjected to physical and mental harassment for a long time. In the past, efforts were reportedly made at the community level to resolve the dispute, but the problems continued.
On July 12th, Sonam called her cousin, Santosh Sunar, and told him that her husband often beat her and had a very short temper. She warned her brother, “Don’t come to my house or call me, or he’ll kill me.”
On 17th July, an argument between the couple reportedly turned violent. After that, police received information that a married woman living in the Bharatnagar area had died under suspicious circumstances, and her family was preparing for the funeral.
Police say Sultan Sumra beat Sonam severely, causing serious injuries that led to her death. Some reports also mention that she was tied up during the assault, but police have yet to officially confirm this, as the investigation is still underway. Gandhidham ‘A’ Division police arrived at the scene immediately after receiving the information. Her husband, Sultan, told police that Sonam suffered from epilepsy and died after falling.
Injuries found during the initial probe
However, police found severe injuries on several parts of the body, making the case suspicious. A serious injury was also found on the back of her head, and blood had collected in different parts of her body because of the severe beating. Her body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination, and then to Jamnagar Medical College for a forensic autopsy. The Forensic examination revealed that Sonam died from multiple injuries.
Sonam’s younger brother Rahul Sunar, who works as a laundry worker in Dubai, reached Gandhidham and lodged a complaint against Sultan Jusab Sumra. Acting on the complaint, East Kutch Police registered a murder case and took the accused into custody. Gandhidham A-Division Police is continuing the investigation to find out all the circumstances surrounding the crime.
The incident has sparked anger among local residents and several Hindu organisations in Gandhidham and other parts of Kutch. The case has also been discussed by some groups as an instance of “love jihad.” Religious leader Yogi Devnath Bapu condemned the killing and demanded the strictest punishment for the accused. He also called for the case to be heard in a fast-track court to ensure speedy justice.
Considering the seriousness of the incident, police have increased patrolling in sensitive areas to maintain law and order. The investigation is continuing, and officials are collecting evidence to establish the complete sequence of events.
