On Saturday (3rd January), a female Booth Level Officer (BLO) was thrashed with shoes after she exposed a Bangladeshi national and illegal voter during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal.
The incident occurred in Ward No. 2 in Dakuni city of Hooghly district. The victim was identified as Bimli Tudu Hansada.
According to reports, the female BLO was physically assaulted after she informed the higher authorities about the presence of an illegal voter in the area. The accused was identified as Abdul Rahim Gazi.
“He is a Bangladeshi national. I told my superiors about it. After that, Abdul and his family attacked me. He hit me with a shoe. My neighbours saw it. His wife created a ruckus at my house. I have informed the police,” the victim narrated her ordeal.
Bimli Tudu Hansada informed that the accused did not have his name in the electoral rolls. He wanted to get his name registered by falsely passing off a man from Burdwan district as his guardian.
Instead of empathising with the victim, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party has instead questioned the working methods and authority of the BLO.
Local TMC councillor Sheikh Ashraf Hossain alleged that the BLO took 10 women to the residence of Abdul Rahim Gazi and charged him by holding his collar.
He claimed that this incident provoked the accused, leading to the assault on the Adivasi woman.
