A court in Delhi on Friday, December 26, granted bail to 6 arrested persons in the India Gate protests of November 23 where pro-Naxal slogans were raised, and police personnel were attacked.
The demonstration, involving mostly Delhi University students linked to Leftist groups like Bhagat Singh Chhatra Ekta Manch (BSCEM) and so-called environmental collective ‘Himkhand’, escalated when participants started raising slogans hailing slain Maoist commander Madvi Hidma and used chilli and pepper spray on police, injuring several personnel.
The 6 persons who were granted bail on Friday are Gurkirat Kaur, Ravjot Kaur, Kranti alias Priyanshu, Aiyashah Wafiya, Abhinash Satapathy and Ilakliya.
Additional Sessions Judge Amit Bansal noted that 16 co-accused have already been granted bail, and ruled no evidence tied the six persons any to ‘banned organizations’. BSCEM and Himkhand are not prohibited, and further custodial interrogation was unnecessary after a month’s detention, the judge noted in the bail order.
Bail was granted on ₹50,000 bonds with conditions, including cooperating in probes. With the 6 persons now out on bail, 22 of the total 23 accused arrested are now on bail.
