An Indian diplomat posted at the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh’s Chattogram was found dead inside the mission premises on Tuesday morning, 19th May, according to a report by PTI citing local police officials.

The deceased Indian officer has been identified as Naren Dhar, who was serving as an Assistant Protocol Officer at the Indian mission. He was 38.

According to the media reports, Dhar’s body was found lying near a bathroom door on the second floor of the old visa centre building of the Indian High Commission premises in Chattogram.

Confirming the incident, Chattogram police spokesperson Aminur Rashid told reporters, “We have been told he was Naren Dhar and serving as the assistant protocol officer at the mission.”

Police officials said that the exact reason behind his death is still not clear. While initial suspicion points towards a possible cardiac arrest, authorities said the final cause of death will only be confirmed after the post-mortem examination. The body was subsequently sent to the morgue at Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital for autopsy.

Aminur Rashid, who is also the Assistant Police Commissioner of Chattogram City, said police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. Dhar’s body was later sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Officials said all necessary legal procedures were being followed as Dhar was a foreign national serving at the Indian diplomatic mission in Bangladesh.

According to information available with the police, Naren Dhar was originally from Chandigarh in Punjab.

So far, neither the Indian High Commission in Dhaka nor the Assistant High Commission in Chattogram has officially commented on the incident. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also not released any statement regarding Dhar’s death yet.

Meanwhile, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North Zone) Amirul Islam told The Daily Star that an unnatural death case would be registered in connection with the incident.

He said Dhar’s mortal remains would be handed over to officials of the Indian Assistant High Commission after the completion of the post-mortem examination and other formalities.
