Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to host his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, for a bilateral summit in Guwahati, Assam, in early July, marking a significant diplomatic engagement in India’s northeastern region. While the visit had been under planning for some time, Japanese media have now reported that the trip has been confirmed, with Takaichi scheduled to arrive in Assam accompanied by a high-powered delegation of over 50 Japanese business leaders and executives.
As per reports, PM Sanae Takaichi is expected to reach Guwahati on 1st July. This will be Takaichi’s first visit to India since taking office. Both countries take turns in hosting the annual bilateral summit, and this year it is India’s turn. But instead of New Delhi, the Modi govt has decided to hold the meet in Guwahati.
According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the delegation includes prominent figures from major Japanese firms such as Suzuki Motor, Itochu Corporation, and Toyota Tsusho, among others. Several companies are expected to sign collaboration agreements during the visit, focusing on sectors like semiconductors, infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing. Assam is increasingly viewed as an emerging hub for semiconductors and digital infrastructure, with investments from Indian giants like Tata Group, Adani and Reliance Industries drawing attention from foreign investors. Japanese firms see opportunities in supporting precision logistics and advanced technologies for these projects.
This visit underscores the deepening India-Japan partnership under the Special Strategic and Global Partnership framework and the Act East Forum. Japan has been supporting infrastructure development in India’s northeast through official development assistance, including projects like the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge and biofuel initiatives. Japan Bank for International Cooperation has been funding several projects in the state.
The summit is expected to advance economic cooperation, security ties, and the vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, building on the joint vision outlined during previous engagements.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been actively preparing for the anticipated high-profile visit. In recent days, he inspected the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati to review facilities, passenger amenities, and security arrangements. Earlier this month, Sarma had said that there is a possibility of the Japanese PM visiting Guwahati on 1st July to hold a summit talk with PM Modi. The state government has already initiated beautification drives across Guwahati to ensure the city presents its best face. The CM emphasised that such visits bring new opportunities for Assam’s development and integration into global value chains.
This visit holds particular historical resonance for Assam. In December 2019, then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s planned summit with PM Modi in Guwahati had to be cancelled at the last minute due to widespread violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which disrupted the city and raised security concerns. CM Sarma recently said that the cancellation of the visit was a great loss for Assam.
The successful hosting of the current summit would symbolise Assam’s progress and the region’s growing role as a bridge to Southeast Asia. The upcoming Modi-Takaichi meeting in Assam is poised to open new avenues for investment, infrastructure, and strategic cooperation, further elevating India’s northeast on the global stage.
