‘Join Congress or face consequences’: FIR against brothers of Uttarakhand MLA Pritam Singh over threatening a local family

A major political controversy is coming from Uttarakhand: Balak Ram Chauhan said that the brothers of Congress MLA Pritam Singh threatened him and forced his family to join the Congress party. The case has been registered.

The FIR was filed at Tyuni police station in Dehradun district against Chaman Singh. He is a former Zila Panchayat chairman and brother of the Chakrata MLA, and Rajpal Singh, a former block pramukh. The complaint was filed by Balak Ram Chauhan, a daily-wage lineman with the Uttarakhand Power Corporation. According to him, he received a phone call in which he was threatened and pressured to make his two daughters join the Congress party. When he refused, the callers abused him and issued death threats.

The case surfaced after audio clips of the alleged conversation went viral on social media, drawing the attention of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The FIR was registered under Sections 351(3) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on Chauhan’s complaint, Tyuni Station House Officer Kuldeep Shah said.

During the ongoing Assembly session, the controversy reached the state’s summer capital, Gairsain. BJP leader Madhu Chauhan, the former District Panchayat chairperson, led a protest saying there was “deep resentment” over the audio clip involving the MLA’s brothers.

The complainant had earlier submitted a formal complaint to Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Dobhal, accompanied by Madhu Chauhan and other BJP leaders.

Deeksha Chauhan, the complainant’s daughter, offered a detailed account of the sequence of events, stating that the dispute stemmed from a college student union election.

She said while speaking to ANI, “My sister and I contested the student union elections at our college. We ran for the positions of General Secretary and Joint Secretary. We stood as independent candidates, without any support from any political party.

She further said, “My family is a supporter of the Congress party; however, some people told Congress leaders that we had joined the BJP. Consequently, Congress leaders, specifically Chaman Singh, called my father. During the call, He used abusive language and even threatened my father. That is where this whole issue began; it started with a simple college election, which has now been blown up into a major political affair.”

Chief Minister Dhami took cognisance of the matter and spoke directly over the phone with Deeksha, assuring the family of every possible support and complete security.

He directed the SSP to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure strict action in accordance with the law. He stated that ensuring the safety and dignity of every citizen was the state government’s highest priority and that no family would be forced to live in an atmosphere of fear.
