The controversy over the gang rape and murder of a Class 10 student in Saran, Bihar, is continuing to deepen with the growing political attention and public anger. Former Bihar state government minister and Savarna Ayog chairman, Mahachandra Prasad Singh, visited the village of Sheetalpatti and met the family of the victim. He reportedly told them that he would ensure a high-level investigation into the incident.
During his visit, Singh met the girl’s mother and sister to find out exactly what had happened. He consoled the family, assured them that he stands with them in their struggle for justice. He also visited the place where the incident had taken place and interacted with the villagers at the spot, calling the crime “very disturbing and inhuman” based on what he had heard from them.
The people of the village have expressed doubts over the way the police are handling the case. They have been demanding that the case be handed over to the CBI within a certain period of time, or that a Special Investigation Team led by a High Court judge be formed to ensure the truth comes out and strict punishment is given.
According to the complaint filed by the girl’s mother at the Derni police station, her daughter had gone to her old house around 3 pm on 11 March to buy groceries. She claimed that five men, who were already there waiting for her at the old house, gang raped her and then dragged her into a well, which led to her death.
On the other hand, the police have presented a completely different version. Bihar’s DGP Vinay Kumar has said, “The initial findings indicate that the girl died due to drowning. He also stated that the boy and girl knew each other and were in a relationship.”
Singh stated that this is not just a tragic incident but also a blot on humanity, and that he would raise this issue strongly with the state government so that justice is delivered quickly.
