Canada’s 3-time Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, may resign this week from his position as the leader of the Liberal Party ahead of the party’s national caucus this Wednesday, according to the Globe and Mail report in Canada. The Globe and Mail has reported that Trudeau is facing a revolt from his own party members and MPs. Citing sources within the party and Trudeau’s close circle, they stated that it is unclear as of now whether he will continue as Prime Minister.
Trudeau’s Liberal Party is facing negative voter sentiments among the Canadian public, triggering fears of an almost wipeout at the hands of Pierre Polliviere’s Conservatives. Trudeau may make a statement to make it appear he wasn’t somehow ‘forced’ by his own MPs to step down.
Many MPs have reportedly expressed their preference for a new leader face for the party before the elections, opposing Trudeau.
Trudeau’s difficulties had been apparent since Crystia Freeland, his Finance Minister and Deputy PM, resigned on December 16. The Atlantic, Quebec and Ontario units of the Liberal party have already signalled that they do not support Trudeau. Of the 153 seats that the Liberal Party has in the House of Commons, these three regions control 131.
