A 17-year-old student in Maharashtra’s Thane allegedly died by suicide after he could not get admission to the institute he wanted to join for higher studies, police said. The teenager had scored an impressive 95.7 % in his Class 12 science exams and wanted to pursue a BS-MS dual degree at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, in Kolkata.

The incident took place on the evening of 4th September at Hiranandani Estate on Ghodbunder Road, where the boy lived with his family. Police said the teenager had left his home at around 7.30 pm, telling his family that he was going out for a cycle ride.
Sent WhatsApp message before taking extreme step
Around 8.15 pm, the teenager sent a message to his family’s WhatsApp group saying that he intended to end his life. By the time his family saw the message and tried to find him, his phone had been switched off.
Worried about his safety, the family immediately contacted the Kasarvadavali police. Police officers, along with the teenager’s family members, began searching the area around the residential complex.
The search ended with the teenager being found severely injured on a pavement near his apartment. Police said he had jumped from the 22nd-floor refuge area of a residential building.
The boy was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Thane for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Disappointed after missing preferred college seat
According to the police, the teenager had recently completed his Class 12 science examinations with 95.7 % marks. He hoped to continue his studies by joining the BS-MS dual degree programme at IIEST, Shibpur, one of the reputed institutes in the country.
He appeared for the institute’s aptitude test but secured a rank of 10,474. Police said he could not get a seat and became deeply disappointed after missing out on admission to the institute of his choice.
His family told the police that they did not suspect any foul play in the incident. They believe that the teenager took the extreme step because of the stress and disappointment linked to his academic situation.
Police register accidental death report
Following the incident, an accidental death report (ADR) was registered by the Kasarvadavali police based on a statement given by the teenager’s father.
Police said their investigation is based on the circumstances surrounding the death and the information provided by the family. The case has brought attention to the intense pressure students can face over academic performance, college admissions and expectations about their future.
Despite scoring 95.7 % in his Class 12 science exams, the teenager was unable to secure admission to the programme he had hoped for. His family has told police that this disappointment was the main reason behind his decision to take his own life.
