Several people were injured after a stampede broke out at a religious event at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on Friday. The incident took place during a sermon by Pandit Pradeep Mishra, when several women and elderly persons fell down due to a chaotic situation.
As per reports, over one lakh people had gathered to listen the reading of Shiv Mahapuran by Pandit Pradeep Mishra. The Maha Shiv Puran Katha is going on in Shatabdi Nagar Sector 4 of Partapur. The venue was filled beyond its capacity on the last day of the six-day program. People trying to enter the pandal scuffled with bouncers who tried to stop them. As a result situation went out of control at the entrance.

As several people fell down due to the stampede, some of them were injured. SP City Ayush Bikram Singh said that they have been admitted to the nearest hospital for treatment. Videos of the incident show several women falling on each other during the commotion.
Police reached the spot soon and brought the situation under control. Police force have been deployed on the spot. Notably, due permission was taken from the administration to organise the event.
Police said that the situation is completely under control, and the Katha is still ongoing. IG Meerut Deepak Meena asserted that “there is no panic situation and there was no stampede-like situation.”
