A minor girl undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College Hospital in Guwahati was allegedly sexually assaulted by a hospital employee. Notably, one woman also helped the man in committing the crime. Both accused, identified as Abdul Rashid and Karabi Roy, both members of the hospital’s cleaning staff, have been arrested.
The 13-year-old victim girl’s mother reported the incident at Bhangagarh Police Station on 21 January 2025. It was alleged that she was sexually assaulted in the Superspeciality ward of the medical college hospital. Following the complaint, the police registered a case under POCSO, and arrested Abdul Rashid and Karabi Roy on Friday. Both of them have been remanded to judicial custody.
The victim girl was given medical attention as per the POCSO act and her statement has been recorded. Moreover, material and technical evidence have been collected for the probe.
As per GMCH officials, Abdul Rashid is not on hospital’s payroll, but he is an outsourced employee. The official said, “The ward boy is not an employee of GMCH; he is outsourced. Also, the girl and the boy have known each other for a year, so it’s difficult to classify this as a case of sexual assault or rape.”
