On Saturday (25th July), Ankita Suresh Sangale, a 19-year-old medical aspirant from Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district, allegedly committed suicide after falling short of the qualifying cutoff by 11 marks in the NEET-UG re-examination.
Ankita was a resident of Jalalpur village in Karjat. The police confirmed that a suicide note was recovered, which indicated that the deceased NEET aspirant was under serious stress over her NEET-UG exam performance. Ankita’s father is a farmer.
On 25th July, when Ankita’s father and brother went to Pandharpur, and her mother was engaged in domestic chores, Ankita went to her room and committed suicide. It was only when Ankita’s mother went to check on her at around 4:30 pm that her death came to light.
Speaking about the matter, Inspector Hanuman Gaikwad said, “The preliminary investigation and the note left by the student indicate she was under severe stress due to her performance in the NEET-UG exam. We have registered an accidental death report, and further investigation is underway.”

During media interaction, Ankita’s uncle Anna Sangle said, “Ankita appeared for the NEET-UG examination on May 3 and was confident about her performance. However, following the cancellation over the paper leak, she had to sit for the re-examination on 21st June.”
“She scored 166 marks, falling just short of her category cutoff of 177. She had been feeling extremely tense since then,” he added.
In her suicide note, Ankita reportedly mentioned that she had scored 166 marks in re-NEET against the cutoff of 177. She was disheartened and depressed because of failing to clear the exam.
The letter states that her dream of becoming a doctor remained unfulfilled. Ankita also mentioned that her parents or brother should not be held responsible for her extreme step.
Earlier, on 20th June, 21-year-old Yash Gosavi allegedly committed suicide in Karanji village, Niphad taluka, Nashik, a day before the re-examination. According to his family, he was deeply upset by the paper leak and the re-examination. He was confident of securing MBBS admission in the first exam.
After the NEET UG paper leak in May this year, more than 20 aspirants have allegedly committed suicide.
