NITI Aayog debunks The Tribune’s ‘construction ban’ report, says no such recommendation made amid West Asia crisis

On 12th May, Chandigarh-based newspaper The Tribune published a report claiming that the NITI Ayog has suggested to the Centre a two-year ban on all major construction works across the country amidst the West Asia crisis.  However, the NITI Aayog alarmist claims made in The Tribune report stated that Aayog made no such recommendation.

In its report headlined, “NITI calls for two-year construction ban as West Asia crisis drains economy”, the newspaper claimed that amidst the ongoing West Asia crisis, the NITI Ayog has “advised the Centre to halt all major construction works across India for two years, including the demolition and reconstruction of the Nirman Bhavan, Udyog Bhavan and Shastri Bhavan ministerial complexes.”

Soon after, the NITI Aayog issued a clarification refuting The Tribune’s misleading ‘source-based’ panic-inducing claims about the construction ban.

“This is regarding the news article headlined “NITI calls for two-year construction ban as West Asia crisis drains economy” published in The Tribune on May 12, 2026. This is to clarify that no such recommendation in any form has been made by NITI Aayog calling for a construction ban. It is further reiterated that the plan on the reconstruction of the various office buildings is being pursued by the respective Ministry and no recommendation for deferment of the process has been made by NITI Aayog,” the Central government’s policy think tank said.
