PM Modi and Finnish President hold delegation-level talks, sign comprehensive migration and mobility agreement: Details

In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 5th March, held a meeting with the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi, and later addressed a joint press conference, where both leaders emphasised the strengthening ties between India and Finland in the areas of education, research and innovation.

Stubb is on a state Visit to India and was given a ceremonial welcome on Wednesday, 4th March, after arriving in the capital with a high-level delegation that includes ministers, senior officials and business leaders.

In the joint press conference, PM Modi said that Finland is an important partner for India in the Nordic region, and the countries are working towards strengthening ties in different areas. The PM said that India and Finland have signed a comprehensive migration and mobility agreement, which seeks to strengthen the links between the innovation environments of the two countries.

The Prime Minister stated that it would help in increasing opportunities for talent and students. He noted that Finland is gradually becoming a preferred destination for Indian students and professionals who want to study and work in advanced research and technology fields.

Modi also discussed how India and Finland would be increasing academic and research cooperation between the two countries. He said both sides have agreed to increase collaboration in areas like teacher training, school-to-school cooperation and research related to the future of education.

The Prime Minister described Finland as a global example in the education sector and stated that it would help in increasing cooperation in human development from school to industry levels. He added that India and Finland would be working together to strengthen joint research and startup collaboration.

The leaders also exchanged views on cooperation in the field of environment and science. PM Modi said that India and Finland are expanding their partnership in Arctic and polar research, as both countries have a common interest in the field of climate studies and advanced scientific exploration.

The purpose of the visit is to strengthen the bilateral relationship and expand cooperation in areas such as innovation, education, research and business collaboration between India and Finland.
