Ram Gopal Varma convicted and sentenced to 3 months in prison, to pay Rs 3.72 lakh compensation: Details

An Andheri Magistrate court convicted Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma and sentenced him to 3 months of simple imprisonment. Varma has also been directed to pay Rs 3.72 lakh to the complaining. Should Varma fail to pay the compensation, he would be liable to spend another 3 months in jail. Since Ram Gopal Varma was not present in court on the day of the judgment, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.

What did Ram Gopal Varma do?

Ram Gopal Varma has been convicted in a cheque bouncing case. The complaint was filed by a company called Shree through Maheshchandra Mishra against Varma’s firm. It was filed under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act pertaining to cheque bounce due to insufficient funds or other reasons.

Shree (complainant company) said that they had supplied hard disks to Ram Gopal Varma from February to March 2018 and had raised tax invoices of Rs 2.38 lakh for the supply to his production company. A cheque dated 1st June, 2018, was issued to the firm but when it was deposited, the cheque bounced due to insufficient funds. When it was informed to him, Varma issued another cheque dated August 22, 2018 but that too bounced due to insufficient funds.

He further said, ‘It is not about settling the rupees 2.38 lakh. The contention was about refusing to be exploited in the attempts to fabricate ..Anyway that’s all I can say for now”.
