The Allahabad High Court on Friday rejected Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rehman Barq’s plea to quash the First Information Report (FIR) against him in the Sambhal violence case. The court said that the police investigation against him in the case will continue asked him to cooperate with the local police.
However, the court ordered the police not to arrest Ziaur Rehman Barq for now. This order was given by a division bench of Justice Rajiv Gupta and Justice Azhar Hussain Idrisi.
The court has said that the sections under which the FIR has been lodged against MP Ziaur Rahman Barq carry a punishment of less than seven years. The police can issue a notice in this case and interrogate the MP.
Notably, Sambhal police has booked local SP MP Ziaur Rahman Barq for inciting the violence that took place on November 24. The FIR was filed against him under several sections following the violence over court-ordered survey of Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal.
SP MP Ziaur Rahman Barq had filed a petition in the High Court seeking to quash the FIR. He had also demanded a stay on his arrest till the decision on the petition. In the plea Barq claimed to be innocent and alleged that a fake case has been registered against him due to political revenge.
