On Monday, January 20, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that the custody of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s son would remain with his mother. A bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and SC Sharma, who spoke with the child through a video link, granted the boy’s custody to his mother, Nikita Singhania.
The case was initiated by a petition from Anju Devi, Atul Subhash’s mother, who sought custody of her grandson. According to the report, the petitioner requested a week to file a detailed affidavit, but Justice Nagarathna declined, emphasising, “This is a habeas corpus petition. We want to see the child. Produce the child. The court will take up the matter after some time.”
Following a 45-minute recess, the child was presented via video link, and to protect his identity, the court restricted visibility to only the child’s feed.
The custody dispute is rooted in allegations made by Atul Subhash, who accused his estranged wife of harassment, claiming it led to his decision to take his own life.
