On Wednesday, 22nd July, a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office drew significant political attention. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and his daughter, MP Supriya Sule, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, triggering fresh speculation about the political significance of the interaction.
Pictures from the meeting quickly went viral on social media. In one photograph, Prime Minister Modi and Sharad Pawar were seen sharing a light-hearted moment while exchanging notes. Another image showed the Prime Minister personally receiving the veteran Maratha leader at the entrance of his office, adding to the political curiosity surrounding the meeting.

Farmers’ issues discussed during the meeting
According to information shared after the meeting, Sharad Pawar submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister highlighting several issues concerning farmers. The memorandum reportedly focused on agricultural challenges, irrigation-related concerns and measures needed to improve the condition of farmers across the country.
While the official agenda of the meeting revolved around farmers’ welfare, the timing of the interaction has attracted political attention, especially because it took place when Opposition parties were stepping up their protests against the government during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Meeting comes amid delimitation bill discussions
The meeting has also fuelled speculation because it comes at a time when the Centre is trying to build wider political support for the proposed Delimitation Bill, which the government is expected to introduce again during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
The NCP (SP), which has eight Members of Parliament, is considered important for the government’s numbers in Parliament. Earlier, Supriya Sule had indicated that the party could consider supporting the legislation if one of its key concerns was addressed.
Speaking at a press conference last week, she had said, “Give the 50% seats increase condition on paper, then we will discuss.”
Speculation over NCP’s future continues
The meeting has also revived discussions about the future political course of Sharad Pawar’s party. In recent weeks, there has been speculation that a section of the NCP (SP) favours closer ties with the NDA. However, according to media reports, BJP sources have maintained that any formal alliance with Sharad Pawar’s faction would only be considered if the two rival NCP groups reunite.
Sources have also suggested that the BJP is not keen on bringing individual leaders from Sharad Pawar’s camp into the alliance without a complete merger of both NCP factions.
Against this backdrop, the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Sharad Pawar has become politically significant. With the Opposition intensifying its attacks on the government inside and outside Parliament, the interaction between one of the senior-most Opposition leaders and the Prime Minister has once again sparked debate over possible political realignments, even though no official statement suggesting any change in political equations has been made.
