‘There was another stampede in Jhunsi, 2 km away from Sangam’: Media reports claim multiple deaths but police yet to confirm

Early in the night of Manuni Amavasya, a stampede situation near Sangam ghat claimed 30 lives and injured around 60 persons. A day later, media reports, videos and witness statements emerged saying that there was another stampede on the same night near Jhunsi, on the other side of Airavat Ghat, barely 2 km away from the site of the previous stampede. The incident reportedly took place at around 5.30 am on January 29.

Police officials have not confirmed the incident. Maha Kumbh DIG Vaibhav Krishna was asked about the incident by Lallantop’s Abhinav Pandey. He stated that the police have no confirmation regarding the incident because nobody has reported the incident. Vaibhav Krishna further added that as media reports are showing some witness statements, there will be an investigation.

Earlier, media reports had shown excavators removing a large number of abandoned clothes and belongings. The Lallantop report showed multiple people at the Jhunsi site, including a family that told on camera that there were dead bodies near their shop and there was no policemen around to help. The shop still has many abandoned Aadhar cards and other belongings. The shop was even looted by some rowdy elements in the crowd.

There has been no official confirmation of the alleged second stampede in Jhunsi. Police and administration have added that they are not aware about the incident and the claims will be probed.
