In a tragic incident, tribal leader and social activist Nisha Bhagat died by suicide on Friday (November 6, 2026) in Ranchi, Jharkhand, minutes after posting on Facebook Live. In a heartbreaking Facebook Live video, Bhagat accused the Hemant Soren government and the administration of persistent harassment and targeting. She said that she was paying the cost of exposing the government’s wrongdoings with her life.
Nisha Bhagat belonged to the Oraon tribal community and was originally from Gumla district. She had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election from Gumla seat in 2024 on a Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) ticket. Bhagat had been fighting for the rights of tribal communities in Jharkhand, opposing land mafia and religious conversion activities that threatened the tribal communities.
In the video posted minutes before her death, Nisha Bhagat is seen breaking down and accusing the Soren government and the administration of harassing her and her parents. “I am ending my life because this Hemant Soren government has crossed the limit in insulting and humiliating a woman (herself). I cannot tolerate this anymore. How much more will my parents have to endure?” Bhagat said on Facebook Live.
“They kept accusing me of being a BJP/RSS broker, but I am nobody’s broker. I have been fighting and struggling for the protection of my tribal society,” Bhagat said, crying profusely in a 10-minute-long video. Bhagat kept repeating that the administration failed her and that she was alone in her fight for her community.

During the Facebook Live, Bhagat called the Pithoria Police Station SHO in charge and told him that she was going to end her life. She accused him of failing to take action against people who had been harassing her and maligning her reputation. She named the JMM government, a person named Ajay Tirkey and the harassment by the local administration for taking the extreme step.
After learning about the situation, a police team rushed to Bhagat’s residence and found her hanging. She was taken to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), where she was declared brought dead.
Nisha’s father submits a complaint
Following Nisha Bhagat’s death, her father, Handu Bhagat, has submitted a written complaint to the SHO, Pithoria police station, demanding the registration of an FIR and strict legal action against Ajay Tirkey, Jyotsna Kerketta, and others. The complaint was received by Sub-Inspector Sunil Kumar Das of the Pithoria police station. Nisha’s father said that her daughter was pushed to end her life as part of a well-planned conspiracy.
Handu Bhagat further said that his daughter had been subjected to prolonged mental and social harassment. Her reputation was maligned on social media, and false accusations were levelled against her. He added that after facing persistent harassment and character assassination, Nisha Bhagat was afraid to even step out of her house.
Nisha Bhagat had long been advocating for protecting tribal rights. Her demands included a ‘Sarna Religious Code’, the protection of jal-jangal-zameen (water, forests, and land) and the implementation of the CNT-SPT Acts and the PESA Act. Bhagat also vehemently opposed religious conversion activities concerning tribal communities.
