UAE denies reports of striking water desalination plant in Iran, says the country will never target civilian infrastructure

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has categorically denied reports of a military strike on an Iranian desalination facility, labelling the claims as “fake news” and emphasising its commitment to distinguishing between the Iranian regime and its civilian population. The denial comes amid a broader escalation in the Gulf region, triggered by a series of Iranian retaliatory attacks on Arab states following Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran earlier this week.

The controversy erupted earlier today when unverified reports surfaced, primarily from Israeli media outlets, suggesting that the UAE had launched a precision strike on a water desalination plant in Iran – marking the first such military response from a Gulf nation to recent Iranian aggression. These claims were amplified on social media by a larger number of people. However, UAE officials moved quickly to quash the speculation.

Dr. Ali Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the UAE’s National Defense Committee, issued a pointed denial in a statement shared widely on X. “This is fake news. The UAE didn’t do that,” Al Nuaimi wrote.

In statement given to media outlets, he underscored the UAE’s humanitarian stance, stating that the country would not target civilian infrastructure such as desalination plants, which are critical for providing fresh water in arid regions like Iran. He said, “The UAE will never place the Iranian people in the same basket as the Iranian regime. The Iranian people are the real victims of that regime and the ones who suffer the most from its policies. As neighbours, we recognize this reality and we care about their well-being.”

The alleged incident unfolds against a volatile backdrop of cross-border hostilities that have intensified since February 28, 2026, when Israel and the United States initiated strikes on key Iranian military and nuclear sites. In response, Iran unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles targeting U.S. bases and Gulf allies, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain. These attacks resulted in significant damage and loss of life. In the UAE, debris from intercepted Iranian drones sparked a major fire at an oil facility in Fujairah, contributing to a death toll of four from the strikes.
