On Sunday (4th January), the local administration and the electricity department in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh launched a campaign against electricity theft.
According to reports, the authorities removed illegal electricity connections and confronted households indulging in such practices.
The District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya and Superintendent of Police KK Bishnoi were present during the campaign, which continued until Monday (5th January).
Reportedly, the police received tipoff about large-scale electricity theft in the area. It was found that a 3-storeyed building was supplying electricity to 40-50 homes by hooking wires to electrical poles.
The electricity department removed the wires and stopped the illegal supply. The owner of the building is a man named Asif. His 6 sons have gone into hiding ever since the police campaign.
This was despite the fact that new meters were installed in the area. It also came to light that households were operating high-power electrical appliances such as heaters and refrigerators using illegal connections.
The local administration and the police department also cut cables, disconnected illegal power lines in the Muslim-dominated Rai Satti police station area and the Deepan Sarai area.
