On 7th June (Sunday), shortly after midnight a clash transpired during the eviction drive by railway authorities at the Jadavpur station area. Several Left and Congress leaders were apprehended during the action. According to reports, at least 5 people have been arrested by the police including Sujan Chakraborty, a member of the central committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist). Furthermore, the party claimed that police resorted to lathi charge, resulting in injuries to its members including Chakraborty and Srijan Bhattacharya, the state general secretary of the Students Federation of India (SFI).
Yesterday at midnight Comrades in Jadavpur were given the royal treatment by Kolkata Police for trying to stop the demolition of illegal structures.

Bulldozers were deployed to dismantle a number of illegal stores and structures near the station. The protestors started to gather at the location, adjacent to the 212-bus stand since Sunday to oppose the move. Congressman Sourav Prasad alongside Left leaders Srijan Bhattacharyya and Ushasi Chakraborty were also present there. The area was heavily guarded by personnel of the Railway Protection Force, Kolkata Police, and central security agencies. Barricades were put up and access to certain parts was restricted. The administration was ready in advance to prevent any challenge to law and order. Officers repeatedly requested the agitators to leave.
However, the latter tried to obstruct the action. Some lied in front of bulldozers while others climbed on top of the machines. Tensions escalated as the work continued and demonstrators alleged that cops used lathi-charge to scatter them. Additionally, SFI supporters protested the arrests and lathicharge by sitting on a dharna on Raja S C Mullick Road in front of Jadavpur University which is close to the railway station.
On the other hand, minister Dilip Ghosh stated that West Bengal was deprived of progress because of encroachment on the footpaths and station premises. “If the footpaths are occupied, the stations are occupied, and public life comes to a standstill for a few people, then how will West Bengal move forward? Those who are sitting there need to think. If thousands of people are occupying, it is not possible to give space to everyone. What is the solution? We have to vacate the place first,” he emphasised.
The Left has been protesting the removal of unauthorised hawkers in the streets of Dum Dum and Jadavpur on numerous occasions in recent times. Earlier, the Left’s coordinated protest forced the bulldozers to retreat. According to the railway authorities, these shops, stalls and buildings on the station grounds were totally unlicensed and had invaded the railway’s property. It added that the eviction procedure was completed in compliance with the laws and regulations. The railways had already carried out a similar campaign to remove unlawful encroachments from the Howrah and Sealdah station grounds.
