Earlier, the Assam government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had launched a massive crackdown against child marriage with police arresting more than 4000 people across the state.

Himanta Biswa Sarma warned Badruddin Ajmal against the practice of banned 'magical healing' and threatened to arrest him if he breached the state law.

"Hear me carefully, as long as I am alive, I will not let child marriage take place in Assam. I will not let this happen as long as Himanta Biswa Sarma is alive...I would like to challenge you politically, I will shut down this shop before 2026," Sarma said.

Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan declared that Quran and Shariat supersedes every law made by the government.

Instead of removing provisions pertaining to the marriage of minors from the legislation, the Congress govt in 2013 increased the registration charges for such marriages from 4 annas to ₹10.

In January this year, Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that Assam will be the third State in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
