The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has moved the Delhi High Court against the acquittal of former Telecom Minister A Raja and DMK leader Kanimozhi among others in the 2G scam case. Earlier, a special court in Delhi had acquitted the accused of all charges stating that the prosecution had “miserably failed” to prove the charges. Special Judge OP Saini had then said, “I have no hesitation in holding that the prosecution has miserably failed to prove any charge against any of the accused, made in its well-choreographed charge sheet. All 17 accused are acquitted.”
The alleged scam had surfaced when then Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai had alleged that over a hundred 2G licenses were given to telecom operators without a free and fair bidding process at throwaway prices which caused an immense loss to the exchequer.
Along with A Raja and Kanimozhi, the special court had last year acquitted 17 others, including DMK supremo M Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal, Shahid Balwa and Vinod Goenka of STPL, Asif Balwa and Rajiv Aggarwal of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd, film producer Karim Morani, P Amirtham and Sharad Kumar, Director of Kalaignar TV.
