Umar Khalid, accused under UAPA for the Delhi anti-Hindu riots, gets interim bail for personal reasons for the second time in 2 years: Here is why

2020 anti-Hindu Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid has managed to snag bail for the second time in 2 years. The Karkardooma court granted Khalid, an accused under UAPA, bail for personal reasons which included attending his cousin’s wedding ceremonies.

The court granted bail for a duration of seven days, from December 28 to January 3.

Khalid, who is presently in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in a larger conspiracy related to the 2020 North East Delhi violence, was temporarily released to attend family events. The court approved his request for bail during this specific period.

Interestingly, Khalid was granted bail in December 2022 for similar reasons. Khalid was granted bail from 23 December 2022 to 30 December 2022 to attend his sister’s wedding. He had to surrender on December 30.

Khalid faces charges of criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly, and multiple sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

In addition to Khalid, others booked under the stringent law include Sharjeel Imam, activist Khalid Saifi, JNU students Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, Jamia Coordination Committee member Safoora Zargar, former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, and several others.

The violence that broke out during the protests against the CAA and NRC resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.
