On Monday (1st December), the Enforcement Directorate initiated action against a Maharashtra-based trust and a Yemeni national for alleged FCRA violations. The probe agency conducted raids at a dozen locations in Nandurbar district and Mumbai. The action came as a part of an ongoing investigation against the Jamia Islamia Ishatul Uloom Trust (JIIU), Yemeni national Al-Khadami Khaled Ibrahim Saleh, and others.
The investigators have said that documents and digital evidence recovered during the searches are being examined.
In July 2024, the Home Ministry has cancelled the registration certificate of JIIU. The investigation by the ED is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The case is based on the FIR registered by the Akkalkuwa police station of Nandurbar police and the charge sheet filed in April this year. Based on the facts uncovered in the investigation, the ED conducted searches at several premises linked to the accused person.
The Home Ministry had cancelled the Jamia Islamia Ishatul Uloom Trust registration certificate after it was found that the trust was diverting the amount of foreign donations to another non-FCRA registered NGO. Following this action by the ministry, the investigation by the Enforcement Directorate was further intensified in the case.
Meanwhile, former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya welcomed the action taken by the authorities against JIIU and accused the trustees of JIIU of conducting non-transparent transactions through shell companies.
