The Trinamool Congress on Thursday suspended Murshidabad MLA Humayun Kabir over his announcement that he will be building a replica of Babri Masjid. The party has accused Kabir of communalising the issue to benefit the BJP, adding that the MLA was warned multiple times in the past.
Senior TMC leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim announced the decision saying, “We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build the Babri Masjid. Why suddenly Babri masjid? We already warned him. As per the decision of our party, TMC, we are suspending MLA Humayun Kabir.”
He added that the comments of Humayun Kabir saying that he will “build the Babri Masjid” were provocative and unnecessary. The party alleged that Kabir made the comments with the intention of fuelling communal tensions, and that he was being encouraged by the BJP to do so.
Following the suspension, Humayun Kabir clarified that the mosque is being built by his trust, and it has nothing to do with Trinamool Congress. He added that he will be laying the foundation stone for the ‘Babri Masjid’ on December 6.

Kabir further announced that he will launch his own party on 22 December. He said that he was earlier suspended for 6 years in 2015, and he will accept the party’s decision to suspend him again.
The TMC MLA has been announcing his intention to rebuild the Babri Masjid in Beldanga in the Murshidabad district for a long time. Ahead of the anniversary of the demolition of the mosque on 6th December, he recently raised the issue again, announcing the launch of the construction. He announced that the foundation stone will be laid on 6 December in Beldanga, adding that it will take three years to complete.
He had also threatened bloodshed if anyone tried to thwart his nefarious plans, and gloated over the fact that the Muslim population is increasing drastically in the State and would become 40% by the time the construction of the mosque is complete.
Party chief Mamata Banerjee was reportedly not happy with his activities, and the party had clarified that it has nothing to with the Kabir’s plans to build the mosque. “If our 100 people die during this campaign, we will ensure that 500 from the other side are killed. This is our challenge,” the TMC MLA had said.
The state govt has put the administration and the police on high alert in Murshidabad ahead of the 6th December event.
