Microsoft commits record US$17.5 billion to boost India’s AI ambitions

On 9th December, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a landmark investment that places India firmly at the centre of the company’s global AI strategy. Following a detailed conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nadella confirmed that Microsoft will commit (1.5 lakh crore (US$ 17.5 billion) to accelerate India’s journey towards an AI-driven future. This is Microsoft’s largest investment in Asia. Lauding the investiment, PM Modi said, “When it comes to AI, the world is optimistic about India”.

Quoting Nadella’s post, PM Modi said, “When it comes to AI, the world is optimistic about India! Had a very productive discussion with Mr. Satya Nadella. Happy to see India being the place where Microsoft will make its largest-ever investment in Asia. The youth of India will harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet.”

The investment is designed to expand India’s AI infrastructure, develop advanced skills, and strengthen sovereign technological capabilities. In a post on social media platform X, Nadella thanked PM Modi for an inspiring conversation and said, “To support the country’s ambitions, Microsoft is committing US$17.5B, our largest investment ever in Asia, to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India’s AI first future.”

The announcement made by Microsoft reflects a wider recognition of India’s growing digital influence and its potential to shape the global technological order. It also positions India as a critical market for AI innovation.

With this investment, Microsoft has deepened its already significant footprint in India. For India, the initiative is a major step in advancing its digital transformation and consolidating its status as a leader in next generation technologies.
