Maharashtra: BJP MLA Ram Kadam cuts his hair after 4 years on fulfilling the promise of resolving water supply problem in Ghatkopar and Vikhroli

Ram Kadam, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Ghatkopar West Vidhan Sabha constituency in Maharashtra’s Mumbai, publicly cut his hair today after four years, marking the success in resolution of chronic water shortages in Mumbai’s hilly areas of Ghatkopar and Vikhroli. He had promised to not cut his hair if can’t resolve the water crisis in Ghatkopar.

The event comes just weeks ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in January 2026, highlighting Kadam’s efforts to address a persistent infrastructure issue in his constituency.

Kadam, the three-time MLA from Ghatkopar West, inaugurated a new water pipeline in the Vikhroli and Anand Gadh areas on Thursday, declaring the water problem solved. Following the ceremony, he had his hair trimmed at the Anandgad Water Tank and donated it to cancer patients.

Kadam said, expressing his satisfaction, “I am happy that water tanks that can accommodate over two crore litres of water are going to be constructed here. Water line from Bhandup has also been connected here.” He elaborated on the project’s scale, noting that a 3-foot-wide, 4-km pipeline from Bhandup is 90% complete, and distribution lines and pumps have been replaced. He said that tank capacity totalling around 2.60 crore litres will be built when the project is fully operational.

Kadam described this as the “Ghatkopar model,” a replicable solution for mountainous regions across India. He said that he started studying the area to resolve the water crisis 5 years, and the project is result of such study.

“This resolve led to 4 years of patience, struggle, constant follow-up, and perseverance… Finally, those efforts have borne fruit,” Kadam posted on X.

Residents in these elevated areas had long faced irregular and insufficient water supply due to gravity-based distribution systems that failed to reach higher terrains. Four years ago, MLA Ram Kadam took a vow in public that he would not cut his hair till the problem is resolved.

The breakthrough came through persistent follow-up and collaboration with the BMC. In 2022, following Kadam’s representations, the BMC commissioned a study on improving water supply in the hilly parts of Ghatkopar and Vikhroli.

This led to the development of the new infrastructure project, including the construction of water tanks, pipelines, and the upgradation of existing distribution lines and pumps, based on surveys to identify necessary changes.
