Karuna Abhiyan: Gujarat govt treats 5439 injured birds during Uttarayan, successfully saves 91% of them

The Gujarat government has rescued and treated 5439 injured birds during the kite flying festival of Uttarayan as part of its ‘Karuna Abhiyan’ initiative.

According to Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, the veterinary doctors and volunteer organisations in the State has treated a whopping 5,439 birds. 91% or 4,937 birds were successfully saved.

Most of the bird injuries caused during Uttarayan are due to lethal kite strings that remain tangled on trees. Karuna Abhiyan initiative was kick-started on 10th January and will continue until 20th of this month across 100s of treatment facilities.

In a statement, range forest officer Dhanraj Choudhar stated, “In Ahmedabad district, the Karuna Abhiyan works in collaboration between the departments of social forestry and animal husbandry, and various voluntary organisations. The initiative has established 96 collection centres, 23 primary treatment centres, and 10 control rooms operating 24/7.”
