West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose resigns ahead of assembly polls, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi to replace him, Ladakh Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta also resigns

In a surprising decision, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose resigned from his post on Thursday after serving for approximately three and a half years. The resignation comes just weeks ahead of the crucial 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, sparking speculation about its timing and potential political implications.

Bose, a retired Indian Administrative Service officer appointed as Governor in November 2022, submitted his resignation letter to the President of India. Confirming the development, he told reporters that he had “spent enough time at the Governor’s office.” Sources indicated that the resignation was accepted promptly, though no official reason beyond his personal statement was immediately disclosed.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi is being appointed as the governor of West Bengal, as per reports.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and concern over the sudden decision, noting that the reasons were not known to her. She said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed her of R. N. Ravi’s impending appointment as the new Governor, without prior consultation. Banerjee suggested the change might be linked to electoral interests, describing the central government as one increasingly defined by “resignations.”

Bose’s tenure was marked by frequent tensions with the Trinamool Congress-led state government, including disputes over university appointments, voter lists, and other administrative matters. Despite past controversies, including demands from opposition parties for his resignation over unrelated allegations in previous years, his exit appears voluntary and unrelated to those issues.

Along with West Bengal’s governor,  Ladakh’s Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta also resigned today after just eight months in office. His term has been marked by escalating unrest in the area, where various civil society groups, including the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, have been demanding statehood, protections under the Sixth Schedule, and job reservations for local residents.
