Marking a significant milestone in India’s journey to becoming an aviation hub, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath today (28th March) inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The airport will strengthen India’s airport infrastructure and will enhance regional and international connectivity. By virtue of being located in the Delhi-NCR region, the airport, also called the Jewar airport, is expected to ease pressure on the aviation network of Delhi.

Addressing the people after the inauguration of the airport, PM Modi said that the airport marks a major step in Uttar Pradesh’s growth story and the aviation future of India. Highlighting the far-reaching impact of the new airport, the PM said that the Noida airport will benefit a vast region encompassing Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Etawah, Bulandshahr, and Faridabad. PM Modi praised the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh for undertaking the construction of the airport in a fast-paced and timely manner. “…the Jewar Airport was approved by Atal ji as early as 2003. And as soon as the current government was formed here, the foundation was laid, construction happened, and now it has started operations,” PM Modi said.
The Jewar airport is among the country’s largest greenfield airport projects
The Jewar airport is among the largest greenfield airport projects in the country. Phase I of the airport has been developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with a total investment of ₹11,200 crore. Initially, the airport will be able to handle 12 million passengers per annum (12 MPPA), with scalability up to 70 MPPA after it is fully developed. The airport has a 3.900-metre runway, which is capable of handling wide-body aircraft and also has modern navigation systems such as Instrument Landing System (ILS) and advanced airfield lighting to support efficient, all-weather, round-the-clock operations.
In addition to that, the airport incorporated a strong cargo ecosystem, which includes a Multi-Modal Cargo Hub, featuring an integrated Cargo Terminal and logistics zones. The airport’s cargo facility is capable of handling over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually, expandable to 18 lakh metric tonnes. The system also includes a dedicated 40-acre Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. The airport has been designed to operate as a net-zero emission facility.
Advanced, passenger-friendly facilities
For the residents of the Delhi NCR region, including those from Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Agra, the Jewar commute to the airport has just been reduced by hours. While right now only the first phase of the airport has been made functional, the work for its expansion is underway. What sets the Jewar International apart is the focus on modern, passenger-friendly facilities in its design. From smart check-in systems to eco-friendly infrastructure, the airport is designed to match global standards.

The airport is equipped with all the advanced features to ensure a smooth experience for passengers, right from the entry to boarding. It has features like self-check-in kiosks to avoid long queues, biometric-based boarding under DigiYatra, automated baggage drop counters and paperless travel systems, aimed at reducing waiting times and providing faster, hassle-free service.
The architecture of the airport ensures passenger comfort and has eco-friendly features. It makes use of natural lighting, has rainwater harvesting systems, and efficient waste management and recycling facilities. The airport has spacious waiting lounges with comfortable seating, premium lounges for business and first-class passengers, duty-free shopping zones with international brands, and restaurants, cafes, and food courts.
A major highlight of the airport is its location along the Yamuna Expressway, which will provide a smooth connectivity to the passengers. The airport also has proposed metro and rapid rail links.
