A grenade attack was reported outside the office of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, on Wednesday evening. A video of the powerful blast has since gone viral on social media. Authorities recovered a blue-colored grenade from the scene.

According to media reports, the attack has been claimed by Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist Sukhjinder Singh Babbar. In a social media post, he allegedly took responsibility and issued a provocative message, warning the Indian state against actions targeting Sikh youth and invoking separatist rhetoric, including calls for Khalistan.
The explosion occurred around 5 PM near the BJP office in Sector 37-A, triggering a high alert among security agencies. Teams from multiple investigative bodies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Punjab Police STF, and the Crime Branch, rushed to the spot to begin a coordinated probe.
CCTV footage that has surfaced shows a suspect pulling the pin of a hand grenade, throwing it near the office premises, and fleeing the scene. Chandigarh Police have begun scanning footage from nearby cameras and have identified two suspects on a motorcycle, who were seen moving around the area both before and after the blast. A city-wide search operation and checkpoints have been put in place.
Reacting to the incident, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar said that a series of recent incidents in the state raise serious concerns about law and order. He added that separatist elements are attempting to disturb peace, but asserted that Punjab’s unity cannot be undermined.
