A major crackdown by Bihar’s Economic Offences Unit (EOU) on 31st March has exposed what appears to be a massive disproportionate assets case involving Kishanganj SDPO Gautam Kumar. The EOU conducted raids at multiple locations, including his government residence in Kishanganj and properties in Purnia, Patna, Araria and Siliguri. 

During the searches, officials recovered 36 land documents, expensive jewellery, luxury watches and papers linked to high-end vehicles. Authorities suspect that Gautam Kumar accumulated assets worth nearly ₹80 crore, which is said to be around 60% more than his known sources of income over his 32-year career.

Maid’s role raises fresh questions

As the investigation moved forward, a surprising angle came to light on Saturday, 4th April, involving a domestic help named Paro, who worked at Gautam Kumar’s official residence. Paro is now under the scanner after it emerged that she may own assets worth crores. She is believed to be originally from the Malda region of West Bengal and is said to have a bungalow worth around ₹1 crore in an area near North Dinajpur.

What has shocked many is her lavish lifestyle, which doesn’t match that of a regular domestic worker. Sources claim she used to commute in a Mahindra Thar SUV worth around ₹35 lakh and was sometimes even dropped off using the SDPO’s official vehicle. According to media reports, Gautam Kumar had gifted her a Bullet motorcycle. During the raid, a gold necklace worth around ₹6 lakh was reportedly found.

Her social media presence also raised eyebrows. She was said to be quite active on Instagram, posting reels with luxury vehicles and even showing large amounts of cash. Soon after news of the raids broke, she locked her account and is now said to be absconding along with her family. Investigating agencies are trying to trace her and find out the source of her wealth.

Background: Massive assets found during the raid 

The EOU’s investigation suggests that Gautam Kumar built a vast network of properties over the years. Apart from multiple plots of land, he is said to own a four-storey luxury house in Purnia, a tea garden in Siliguri, and flats in Noida and Gurugram. Following the raids, he was immediately removed from his post and asked to report to the police headquarters. Suspension proceedings have also been initiated.

Officials are now examining bank accounts, property records and financial transactions to understand how such large assets were accumulated. Gautam Kumar, along with his wife and others, is expected to be questioned further as the probe deepens.

Properties linked to wife and girlfriend

Investigations have also brought attention to the assets linked to his family. His wife, Ruby Kashyap, is a government school teacher but is said to maintain a high-end lifestyle, including using a luxury Thar SUV. The couple reportedly lives in a lavish bungalow in Purnia worth around ₹2.5 crore, with interiors said to have cost over ₹1 crore.

There are also claims of properties being linked to the girlfriend of the SDPO, named Shagufta. Reports suggest that some land was earlier purchased in her name with the help of her family and later transferred to Gautam Kumar’s son. Receipts of jewellery purchases have also reportedly been found at locations linked to her.

With each new detail, the case is becoming more complex. The EOU is now looking into whether the maid’s assets are connected to Gautam Kumar’s illegal wealth, making this one of the most talked-about investigations in the region.
