UP horror: Psycho killer shoots 3 strangers dead across 2 trains and a hospital in Chandauli, killed in a police encounter

On 10th May (Sunday), 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh was killed in a police encounter when he sprayed bullets on a police squad as they were reconstructing the crime scene in Dariyapur village, Sakaldiha area of Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh. He was from Tarn Taran in Punjab and was nabbed in relation to the murder of 3 people, including a woman, at three separate places.

“He revealed that he was discharged from the Army in 2021. Subsequently, on 29th April, he travelled from Punjab to Bihar to take up a job as a security guard. He had developed an alcohol addiction, which led to his dismissal from the job. Since then, he had been harbouring deep resentment and mental distress,” informed Superintendent of Police Akash Patel.

“On 10th May, in Chandauli, the accused shot and killed a man aboard a passenger train. He similarly shot and killed another man on a different train, and this morning, he shot and killed a woman at a hospital,” the senior official mentioned. Two murders were unprovoked, and one transpired after a verbal dispute with the victim.

“He was taken to the crime scene for a reconstruction of the events. During this process, he opened fire on the police team in an attempt to escape. The police cordoned off the area, and in the ensuing retaliatory fire, he sustained two gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” Patel conveyed.

Singh acknowledged his role in the heinous acts during questioning. He additionally disclosed that he was furious about being fired from his position as a security guard in Bihar’s Ara. Two police officers, who were hurt during the violent altercation, were also taken to the hospital. They are receiving treatment.

The top cop added, “The accused had stated that he was consumed by rage and was committing these murders randomly, without any personal animosity toward the victims. Further action regarding this case is currently underway.” Two weapons were recovered from his possession: a revolver and a sawed-off double-barreled gun. One was purportedly licensed in his name, while the other was considered to be illicit. They will undergo forensic analysis.

According to police, the culprit was brought to the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction railway station for the purpose of reconstructing the murder scene. He was thereafter taken to the location where the first victim’s body had been found near the Sakaldiha police station. Officers reported that he abruptly took a weapon from one of them, started shooting at the police squad and ran away. A coordinated search operation was started, and more cops were sent to the spot. During the combing operation, Singh again opened fire at them, after which they shot him in the chest in retaliation.

The cold-blooded murders

On 9th May, Singh took a train to Prayagraj. He boarded the PDDU-Tarighat passenger train in the morning after arriving at the PDDU Junction in Chandauli. He engaged in a heated exchange of words with a man named Mangru Chaudhary (34) from Ghazipur while the train made its way through the Alinagar region. He then shot the latter at close range and hurled his body into the railway lines. When the train slowed before it reached Sakaldiha, he leapt off and fled amid commotion in the coach.

Officials stated, “SP GRP Prashant Verma reached Chandauli to monitor the investigation. However, before the team could find any clue, the killer boarded the S2 coach of the 13151 Kolkata-Jammu Tawi Express train, in which Dinesh Shah (42) of Gaya was travelling with his family for Naimisharanya. His sister, two children and his sister’s mother-in-law were travelling in the general compartment at the rear. Immediately after the train left PDDU Junction around 1.35 am and passed through Block Hut-B, Shah was shot by Singh near the washroom.”

The GRP pulled down the body and began legal procedures, including gathering evidence, when the train arrived at Varanasi Junction at 2:42 in the morning. Singh fled the Kolkata-Jammu Tawi Express train, walked around on foot and arrived at the Jeevak hospital in Kamalapur. He identified himself as Virendra when registering as a patient and consulted a doctor.

He later relocated to a hospital unit on the top floor. Witnesses disclosed that Singh shot Laxmina Devi, a 55-year-old patient from Bihar’s Bhabhua district, in her temple and killed her. Afterwards, he ran away and fired another round before leaving the hospital. An auto driver who had come to drop off a patient pursued him and caught hold of him as he attempted to escape on a motorbike. He was thrashed by the people, but the police arrived swiftly and apprehended him.
