Gujarat: Surat court orders criminal case against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over derogatory remarks on brahmins

A court in Surat, Gujarat, has directed the police to register a criminal case against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over his controversial comments about the Brahmin community made on social media in April 2025.

The order was passed by the Surat Judicial Magistrate Court after a complaint was filed by Kamlesh Rawal, a lawyer from Surat and a member of Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

What the complaint said

According to the complaint, Kamlesh Rawal came across a social media post on 16th April, 2025, in which Anurag Kashyap had made derogatory comments while responding to criticism related to Brahmin groups.

The complaint claimed that the filmmaker’s comments had hurt the sentiments of the Brahmin community and could create tension between different religions and castes. It also said that such statements could disturb the peaceful atmosphere in society. Rawal further stated in his complaint that the repeated comments reflected Kashyap’s mindset and damaged the image of the Brahmin community.

The court finds grounds for action

After reviewing the complaint and related documents, the court said there were sufficient grounds to believe that the social media posts could defame a community and promote hatred between groups. The court then ordered the registration of a case against Anurag Kashyap under Sections 196, 352 and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

These sections relate to promoting enmity between communities, insulting someone with the intention of disturbing peace, and spreading information that may create hatred among communities. However, the court has only ordered the registration of a case for now. The request seeking Kashyap’s arrest and immediate legal action by the Police Commissioner has not been granted at this stage.

How the controversy started

The issue began in April 2025 during the controversy surrounding the film Phule in Maharashtra. At that time, some Brahmin groups had objected to the film, following which Anurag Kashyap posted a long message on Instagram criticising the protests. During an exchange in the comment section, a social media user mocked Kashyap. In response, the filmmaker made a controversial remark mentioning Brahmins. He replied by saying, ‘Brahmin pe moo^ga, koi problem?’, which quickly went viral and triggered strong reactions online.

After facing heavy criticism on social media, Anurag Kashyap later shared another post apologising for his words. He said that he had reacted in anger and ended up making comments about the entire Brahmin community, which hurt many people. He also expressed regret and apologised to those who were offended by his statement.
